Dr. Murali Mohan Gurram

Dr. Murali Mohan Gurram is a distinguished Ophthalmologist, highly qualified and with extensive experience in his field, specialising in vitreo-retina and topical phaco. Based in Hyderabad, he is available for consultations at the Sree Netralaya and the Sri Mahalaxmi Eye Hospital. He has also been associated with the Lalitha Eye Hospital in Nellore as a Visiting Retinal Surgeon. Dr. Gurram completed his MBBS in 1998 and went on to obtain an MS in Ophthalmology and the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) title. Dr. Murali Gurram has been involved in a variety of roles during his professional career. After completing his MS in Ophthalmology, he was posted as Assistant Professor in Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, from September 2003 to September 2004, where he gained good experience in anterior segment surgeries, especially in topical phaco procedures. He also gained valuable teaching experience and camp organisational skills during his tenure here. He then moved to the Lalitha Eye Hospital, Nellore, for the following two years, designated as Consultant Ophthalmologist. His next stint was in the area of training and clinical activities, as Assistant Professor at the Chalmeda Anand Rao Institute of Medical Sciences, Karimnagar from August 2006 to October 2008. He continued in this role at the Kamineni Institute of Medical Sciences, Narkatpally, for another two years up to September 2010, after which he was promoted to Associate Professor, a post he held until March 2012. From here, he moved to Hyderabad, at the Kamineni Academy of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, where he was until September 2013.

Dr. Gurram was then designated as Professor and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Kamineni Academy of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, a title he held until February 2014. Concurrently, from October 2008 until February 2014, he also held the post of Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon at the Kamineni Hospital, LB Nagar, Hyderabad.

Dr. Gurram has vast surgical and related experience, having performed phaco surgeries under topical anaesthesia on a daily basis for over ten years (over 4,000 cases totally). He is proficient in scleral buckling, vitrectomy and trabeculectomy procedures and is familiar with retinal laser treatments and intra-vitreal injections for retinal problems. He is an experienced eye camp organiser too, having conducted more than 50 such camps; he has also attended at over 700, including cataract, glaucoma and retina camps.

Dr. Gurram is a prolific writer of research papers, and his work has been publicised in numerous presentations, peer-reviewed publications and regional television shows. The major areas of his clinical research are in the fields of topical phaco for different types of cataracts, phaco in cataracts with diabetic retinopathy, diabetic retinopathy, periocular and intra-vitreal injections for retinal diseases. Dr. Gurram is also actively involved in general public education through many videos and self-scripted literature appearing in health magazines and on the Internet. He has participated in social activities such as school health camps, regular seminar programmes, teacher training programmes, etc.

Dr. Gurram is a recipient of many awards for his contributions and is a valued member of several professional organisations and bodies. He maintains an active Facebook page which is dedicated to clearing misconceptions and doubts regarding eye care. Besides his professional commitments, he also finds time to indulge in extra-curricular hobbies which include pencil and ball-point sketching and photography. In addition to English, he is fluent in Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Tamil.
